Pioneer Living Program

Enhance your Colorado History curriculum with this true to life standards-based hands on program geared to 4th grade classrooms.

Students will experience pioneer living while participating in numerous skills. Activities include pioneer toys and games, fire-building, making butter, grinding corn then frying up tasty johnny cakes over a fire, pioneer tools, gold-panning, using a drop-spindle, button-making, using ink and quill pens and making yummy apple cider using a cider press. Start off the program with 2 classroom presentations to set the stage through storytelling and demonstrations followed by a full day where students rotate through various sessions. We encourage students and teachers to dress as the pioneers did for an authentic feel of the 1850’s.
